CREEPY

Koichi is looking forward to a calm and relaxed life. He and his wife move into a small house far away from all the action. After a traumatic experience he traded his policeman’s job for that of a teacher. There’s only one problem: Koichi is miserable, so when an ex-colleague asks for help with a “cold-case” he doesn’t hesitate. It concerns a whole family that has vanished without trace, except for the daughter who can’t remember anything. Meanwhile Koichi’s wife Yasuka has made the acquaintance of a neighbor Nishino, whose odd behavior first elicits astonishment, then irritation and ultimately naked fear. Kiyoshi Kurosawa has proved his mastery of deep and relaxed suspense cinema with his philosophic horror-stories “Cure” and “Pulse”. In his tales the horror isn’t hiding, it’s right in front of you, appearing to be perfectly normal and in daylight even friendly. “Creepy” is an ambiguous thriller about trust and familiarity, about the erosion of a society based on mutual solidarity and collective isolation. Because everyone has a neighbor like Nishino, skillfully portrayed by Teruyuki Kagawa from Kurosawa’s “Tokyo Sonata”, but no one dares to take a look whether he actually hides skeletons in his closet. What a “Creepy“ performance!
